Water Damage on Your Phone: What to Do in the First Hour

What you do in the next 60 minutes matters more than almost anything that happens afterward. Act fast, and in the right order.

Do’s and don’ts at a glance

Do Don’t
Power it off immediately Turn it on “just to check”
Remove case, SIM tray, attachments Shake the phone
Dry the outside with a soft cloth Use a hairdryer or heat source
Get it to a technician within 24 hours Use rice
Leave it powered off until checked Charge it to test the battery

Do this immediately

  1. Power it off right away — if it’s already off, don’t turn it on to check. Powering on a wet phone is the single most common cause of permanent short-circuit damage.
  2. Remove the case, SIM tray, and any attachments so trapped water can escape and air can reach the ports.
  3. Dry the outside with a soft cloth — don’t shake the phone, which pushes water further into internal components.
  4. Leave it off until a technician can open it up and check internally — ideally within 24 hours.

Never do this

  • Don’t use rice. It doesn’t actually draw out moisture from inside the device, and rice dust can get into the ports.
  • Don’t use a hairdryer or any heat source. Heat can warp internal components and push moisture deeper in.
  • Don’t charge it, even to “just check if it’s dead.” Charging a wet phone risks a short circuit.
  • Don’t tap or press the screen repeatedly to “test” it — this can push water further into the display assembly.

What happens at a professional water-damage check

  1. The device is opened and inspected internally for moisture and corrosion.
  2. Affected components are cleaned with specialized equipment — not a quick wipe-down.
  3. Any corroded or damaged parts (common ones: charging port, battery, logic board connectors) are identified and a repair quote is given before any part is replaced.

How likely is a full recovery?

It depends heavily on timing and the liquid involved. A phone brought in powered-off, within a few hours, in clean water, has a meaningfully better outcome than one left on for a day in salt water or a sugary drink — corrosion from salt or sugar accelerates damage even after the phone is dry.

A quick timeline of what happens to a wet phone

  • 0–10 minutes: surface water only — the best-case scenario if the phone is powered off immediately.
  • 10 minutes–2 hours: moisture begins seeping past seals and ports into the mid-frame — still a strong recovery chance with a prompt professional check.
  • 2–24 hours left untouched: corrosion starts forming on exposed connectors, especially with salt water or sugary liquids — repair becomes more involved, but often still possible.
  • 24+ hours, or powered on while wet: the highest-risk window — a short circuit may have already damaged the logic board, battery, or both.

This is a general guide, not a guarantee — the only way to know your device’s actual condition is a professional internal inspection.

Frequently asked questions

My phone is “water resistant” — do I still need to worry?
Yes. Water resistance ratings degrade over time (seals wear out, previous repairs can break the seal) and were never a guarantee against full submersion or liquids other than fresh water.

How long can I safely wait before getting it checked?
The sooner the better — ideally within 24 hours. Corrosion actively continues to spread the longer moisture sits inside, even after the outside feels dry.

Is water damage covered by warranty?
Manufacturer warranties typically exclude liquid damage. A professional diagnostic will confirm what’s repairable and give you a clear price before any work begins.
